The Labradors we take in come from all different type of circumstances. We rescue them from the local shelters and humane societies so that they are not euthanized; we take them in from owners that can no longer keep their Lab for a variety of different reasons; we are contacted about strays, and make every effort to locate it's owner. The quantity of Labradors needing to be re-homed is overwhelming.
When these Labs come into our organization, they are sent to the vet for a physical check-up and for vaccinations (if their records are unknown). Then they are temporarily kept in the warm, cozy homes of volunteers until they are placed into their new forever home.
These volunteers are known as Foster Caregivers. The caregivers will then observe the labs behavior, temperment, and health status. This is the only way for us to establish what would be the best home environment for each individual lab. All labs, and all dogs, are different and each have different needs. It is our goal to place each lab in a home that will best suit the needs of the lab.
Having qualified foster caregivers is our greatest need. If we have no place to temporarily home the dogs, we are not able to take them in ... thus putting the dogs at risk to be euthanized.
Fostering a homeless pet is one of the most rewarding jobs there is. Yes, it can be difficult to let go and say good-bye when the new home is found ... but to know that it was your effort, your hard work, your love and compassion that made that animal be who he/she is today ... that makes it all worth it. When you know that the animal and the new home are a perfect match for each other, you know that you've done your job right. There just isn't much of a better feeling than that.
If you have the desire to volunteer for us by opening up your home to a homeless laborador on a temporary basis, we would love to hear from you.
